.co.za or .com: which domain should a South African business use?
Written by Carl, the person who builds every site. Updated 14 October 2026.
If your customers are in South Africa, use .co.za. It tells people at a glance that you are local, and it tells Google the same thing, which helps you show up in South African searches. Choose .com if you sell abroad or plan to. If you can, register both and send one to the other. More important than either: the domain must be registered in your name, not your web designer's.
What .co.za says
A .co.za address is South Africa's own. Customers read it as local, which matters for a plumber, a salon or an accountant whose customers are all within driving distance. Google treats country endings like .co.za as a signal that a site is aimed at that country, so it can help you in local results.
When .com is the better choice
- You sell to customers outside South Africa, or plan to.
- Your business is online only and location is beside the point.
- The .co.za version of your name is taken and the .com is not.
.co.za
- Reads as local straight away
- A local signal to Google
- Usually cheaper to renew
- The natural choice for a business serving South Africa
.com
- Reads as international
- No country signal
- Better if you sell abroad
- Often taken already for common names
Should you buy both?
If both are available, yes. It stops someone else taking the other one, and it catches customers who type the wrong ending. Pick one as the real address and send the other to it, so Google only ever sees one version of your site.
The rule that matters more than the ending
Make sure the domain is registered in your name, with your email address on it. A domain registered by a web designer or an IT company in their own name is the most common way small businesses lose control of their own website. When the relationship ends, getting it back can take weeks, and sometimes it never comes back at all.
If you do not have a domain yet, I check what is available, register it in your name and cover the first year, for R950. If you have one but someone else controls it, I chase them for you.
Common questions
- Does a .co.za domain help with Google?
- It helps Google understand that your site is aimed at South Africa, which can help in South African results. It will not make up for a slow site or thin content, but it points in the right direction.
- Can I change from .com to .co.za later?
- Yes, with redirects set up properly so you keep your Google ranking. It is easier to choose well at the start.
- Who should the domain be registered to?
- You, the business owner, with your own email address. Never your web designer.
